Telephone subscriber base increases by 4.41 per cent in April-June 2014, says TRAI

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the telecom subscriber base increased by 4.41 per cent from 903.09 million for the quarter ended June 2013 to 942.95 million for the quarter ended June 2014. The overall teledensity increased from 73.50 per cent in April-June 2013 to 75.80 per cent in April-June 2014. As of end-June 2014, the urban subscriber base stood at 559.77 million while the rural subscriber base reached 383.18 million.

Further, the total wireless subscriber base saw a net addition of 10.41 million subscribers in April-June 2014. The wireless base increased by 4.76 per cent from 873.36 million for the quarter ended June 2013 to 914.92 million for the corresponding quarter in 2014. However, the wireline subscriber base declined by 5.72 per cent from 29.73 million to 28.03 million. Meanwhile, the total number of Internet subscribers increased to 259.14 million as of June 2014.

Further, the monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) for GSM service increased by 6.72 per cent from Rs 111 in April-June 2013 to Rs 119 in April-June 2014. The CDMA based ARPU increased by 13.4 per cent from Rs 98 to Rs 112 for the period under review.

The gross revenue (GR) and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of the telecom service sector for the quarter ended June 2014 stood at Rs 629.19 billion and Rs 438.52 billion, respectively.
